Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will start collecting toll tax on national
highways from April 20. In this regard, the Ministry of Road Transport and
Highways have also written a letter to NHAI.
What is written in the Ministry's letter?
In a letter
to NHAI, the ministry said, "Toll tax should be recovered from April 20,
2020. In fact, on March 25, the government temporarily halted the collection due to the lockdown implemented in the wake of the coronavirus to
ease the transportation of essential commodities.
After this,
NHAI wrote a letter to its ministry on 11 and 14 April. In this letter, the emphasis was laid on introducing toll tax collection. In this letter, NHAI
argued saying that the Ministry of Home Affairs
has given permission for many works from April 20.
According to
NHAI, the government gets revenue from the collection of toll tax and NHAI also
benefits from this. Rating agency Icra has told that NHAI is expected to suffer
a loss of Rs 1822 crore due to the lockdown.
However,
toll-running agencies say that the risk of virus infection is still high, so it
is too early to start toll collection. The official of a private toll-running the agency said, "We cannot tell from where the man is coming to the toll
booth. Not everyone uses Fastag. There is a high risk of infection. "

At the same
time, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) associated with the transport
industry has opposed the government's move. All India Motor Transport Congress
has said that this is very wrong. The government wants the supply of essential
commodities to continue, and our community is doing so despite all the
obstacles. In such a situation, we should continue to get this exemption. About
95 lakh trucks and transport establishments come under AIMTC.
